The Difference Between Me And You Is Your Laptop's Not On Fire

One of my all-time favorite album titles is from noise rock band Mclusky. Their 2004 release was called "The Difference Between Me And You Is That I'm Not On Fire."

That album title was fairly fitting to my NANOWRIMO experience so far. When I went to plug in my laptop this afternoon to write, it actually almost caught fire. It wasn't a battery thing like with all those recalls (I have a Toshiba). Something went horribly haywire in the power adapter (the third this laptop has had in less than a year) and it started kicking out fire like a little acetyline torch.

My room still smells like burning plastic.

My laptop is fine. This is good as my desktop doesn't really exist anymore except to provide my roommate with an extra hard drive. But it's still freaking me out that even my computer is revolting against my doing NANO this year.

Not that it takes technical issues for me to not be able to write this year so far (as if this year is more than 45 hours old). I've also had health issues.

I took today off work (time when in most years I would have been writing) to go to the doctor to get checked out for a case of dizzy spells that I've been having. Turns out that I have some sort of crap in my inner ears (the doctor described them as "little particles") that's causing me major health issues and that it's being exacerbated by a major sinus infection.

It's so bad that I got put on Avalox. Avalox is one of those, take for one week because it's so powerful that more would actually harm your body. It's in the same family as what the military gives soldiers going into possible biological warfare (but a much lesser dosage and in pill form and not in inject yourself or die form).

So that makes me a bit sleepy and somewhat lackadaisical. But I guess no more sleepy and lackadaisical than the infection itself.

After the 1025 words at midnight on the first, I've actually only written an additional 373 words - one more introductory vignette. But I will try to pick up the pace a bit tonight. I am, after all, a notoriously slow NANO starter.

And, well, the kickoff party for Chicago is tomorrow night so NANO hasn't even really started in the region yet. Yeah, that's it, it hasn't started yet. :)

That means I'm actually ahead of the game. ;)
